The Weekly Reset

So often, kids with ADHD or executive functioning struggles are told, you can do better or you have so much potential. You are so smart; you can do this. But, to just throw these catchphrases around without following through is so harmful to a student who consistently struggles with managing the way that their bodies and brains are just naturally wired to function. Yes, they are so smart. Yes, they have so much potential. But, without real, concrete ways of unlocking this potential, we are unknowingly building stress and anxiety in these students. They hear us loud and clear - they could and should be better… But how?

Here is the Weekly Reset, a space where kids (along with the help of a parent or teacher) can take control of their lives and schedules. The goal of the Weekly Reset is to empower students to play a more active role in considering their priorities, setting their goals, and organizing their weeks so that they build into the year and into the life that they are actively choosing. Say goodbye to passive acceptance of whatever is and welcome student voice, control, and agency.

What is the Weekly Reset?

The Weekly Reset comprises two parts. The first part is a short book that guides parents or educators in supporting students who struggle with organization and executive functioning - both through using the accompanying planner and beyond. But the foundational component is that 15 minutes each week will establish routines and patterns that will help students succeed in high school or middle school and set them up for future success in college. The second part is a planner and workbook that students can use weekly. At first with a little support from an adult, but eventually, on their own, students will plan and organize each week, reflect on their progress, and monitor their own progress.

Any kid who has been part of a sports team or plays an instrument knows all too well that practice pays off. The notion that practice makes perfect or hard work creates results has surrounded our kids on the field, court, or stage, so now we can harness that in the name of building executive functioning skills too. The Weekly Reset is the opportunity to step into a student’s day and coach them into achieving their greatest hopes.
